Summer Walks on the Ridge

We're spending a lot of time up on the ridge while our 'island in the sky' is being built. I cannot say that living in a trailer a wonderful thing.. but being up here on Roosevelt Ridge is fabulous. And we're certainly anticipating the day when the house is finished and the mountain is truly our home.

One of the benefits of living up on the ridge is our early morning walks with the pups. Believe me they have come to see these long mountain walks as a right, not a privilege. The ridge is filled with many hiking trails. One of the nicest things about living here is knowing that these trails will always be apart of our lives thanks to the conservancy approach the developers of Roosevelt Ridge have taken... allowing owners to only develop the land within their 2 acre building envelope and leaving the rest of this beauty unspoiled and accessible to all of the residents through the use of the trail system.

This morning's walk was one that Michael and the pups had discovered while I was off visitng family. The trail heads off near lot 19, and wraps around the beautiful lot 19 building envelop which is set in an Aspen grove and includes big mountain views. The path winds through thick cool forests, past mountain meadows filled with wild flowers, down to Ellsworth Creek along the northwest corner of Roosevelt Ridge.

You hear the creek long before you see it.. Ralph and Abby certainly knew right were to find the brisk, but refreshing stream. After the long walk to get there, they were more than pleased to run through the water and cool off.

We've found some very unexpected artifacts on our walks. This trail features an abandoned and rusted mining excavator of some sort.. It's down in the creek bed leaving us wondering what the owners were doing.. looking for gold in the creek? I suspect we'll never know but it is interesting to speculate.

Our friend Smith advised us today at our post-walk breakfast at The Last Shot, that slow but steady is the way to go on hikes at mountain altitudes. I'm happy to report I've got the S-L-O-W down.. I'm trusting that with more practice I'll get better at the steady party. For now.. I'm happy to take lots of breaks along the way to snap photos, look for animal tracks, and enjoy the wild flowers and the play of light as it filters through the forest. I find myself thinking about the people who walked this way decades before me as I breathe in the beauty. (Okay.. yes.. it's a lot of heavy breathing... GASPING for air .. especially on the long walk back UP.)

I really should get up very early and take these photos in the best of the early morning light.. but one of the other benefits of mountain living is sleeping in the fresh mountain air. This time of year we can leave the windows open all night long. Sandwiched between our memory foam mattress topper and our down comforter, it's very hard to get up and out on an early morning photo safari.

We are happy to report that living on the ridge exceeds all of our expectations. This close but remote, unspoiled mountain development has all of the amenities we need.. good roads, easy access, electricity, natural gas, telephone, internet.. and all of the pristine beauty we dreamed of.

We're hoping that our new home will stay on track for an October move-in date. Drop in any time and we'll give you a tour.
